Fotofestival Mannheim-Ludwigshafen-Heidelberg: Fourth Edition Challenges Western Gaze
The fourth edition of the Fotofestival Mannheim-Ludwigshafen-Heidelberg, titled 'The Eye is a Lonely Hunter,' takes place from September 10 to November 6, 2011, at sixteen locations across three cities in Germany. Curated by Katerina Gregos and Solvej Ovesen, this event features fifty-six photographers and ranks as Europe's second-largest photography festival, following Les Rencontres d'Arles. Drawing inspiration from Edward Steichen's 1955 show 'The Family of Man,' it incorporates non-Western viewpoints. Highlights include Boniface Mwangi's portrayal of the 2008 Nairobi post-election riots, Fouad Elkoury's coverage of Beirut, Bani Abidi's light boxes addressing Pakistani minorities, Said Atabekov's exploration of interreligious tensions in Kazakhstan, and Chen Chieh-Jen's take on China's final public execution. The festival is organized into five sections, with solo exhibitions at thematically appropriate venues.
