Foto/Industria Biennial Explores Technosphere Through Photography
The Foto/Industria biennial in Bologna, curated by Francesco Zanot (succeeding François Hébel after three editions), adopts the title 'Technosphere' to examine photography's future. Three historical exhibitions debut: André Kertész's early American work on textile industry (from Paris state archives); Luigi Ghirri's commissions for Ferrari, Costa Crociere, Bulgari, and Marazzi (with proof albums); and Lisetta Carmi's series on Italsider and Genoa port workers (curated by Gianni Martini). Albert Renger-Patzsch captures early 20th-century Ruhr industry, while Edward Burtynsky's Anthropocene project is shown at Fondazione Mast. Contemporary works include Matthieu Gafsou's transhumanism, Yosuke Bandai's waste poetics, David Claerbout's aging Berlin stadium (designed by Albert Speer for the Third Reich), Stephanie Syjuco's cable car evocation, and Armin Linke's deep-sea exploration addressing exploitation and indigenous protests. The biennial reflects on industry as both constructive and dangerous, with Zanot emphasizing the curatorial role as a political stance.
