Forward-deployed engineers become AI industry's most sought-after specialists
According to Christian & Timbers, an executive search firm, merely around 2,000 engineers in the U.S. possess the required sector expertise, credibility, and hands-on AI experience to ensure a return on investment for AI initiatives. Anticipated demand for forward-deployed engineers (FDEs) is set to increase by 2,100% by the end of the year, following discussions with more than 250 C-suite leaders and surveys of 80 Fortune 500 executives conducted from January to June 2026. At the beginning of the year, only 5% to 10% of firms intended to recruit FDEs, but this figure escalated to 70% by the second quarter. Approximately 17,000 FDEs are currently in the U.S., many working at Palantir. Christian cautions that this demand may be temporary, as automation could alter the industry in the future.
