Fortress House, Gibraltar's first major contemporary art museum, opens in 2025 with a focus on post-1970 works
Fortress House, a private contemporary art museum, will debut in Gibraltar during autumn 2025, marking the territory's first institution of its kind. Housed in a renovated colonial-era building that once served as the Governor of Gibraltar’s residence, the museum features a collection dedicated to art produced after 1970. An anonymous collector founded the venue, which local firm Gamma Architects has redesigned to preserve Georgian elements while adding modern amenities. These include a double-height first-floor space for large-scale commissions, two cafés, an art education centre, and a rooftop sculpture garden. Under director Henry Little, programming will explore themes of individual identity and societal pressures, aiming to promote a more inclusive art historical narrative. Female artists are strongly represented, with works by Louise Bourgeois, Tracey Emin, Jenny Holzer, Zanele Muholi, Cindy Sherman, and Shirin Neshat. Little emphasized to Ocula the ambition to position Gibraltar as a cultural destination, aligning with significant investment and commitment.
