Forsythe and Ikeda Installations at Grande halle de la Villette
Two large installations animate the Grande halle de la Villette in Paris until December 31 as part of the Festival d'Automne. Choreographer William Forsythe (b. 1949) presents 'Nowhere and Everywhere at the Same Time N°2', an analog work filling the space with hundreds of pendulums. Artist and musician Ryoji Ikeda (b. 1966) offers a monumental digital version of his 'Test Pattern project', a generative system converting data streams into barcode-like geometric patterns. Both works require direct viewer participation through bodily interaction. Forsythe explains that navigating the pendulums without being hit creates involuntary choreographies, as people invent their own navigation within the unpredictable environment, activating innate predictive faculties.
