Former Sotheby's and Gagosian Executive Releases Comprehensive Art Market History Book
Valentina Castellani, an experienced art market professional with roles at Sotheby's and Gagosian, has authored a new book titled 'Trading Beauty: Art Market Histories from the Altar to the Gallery.' The publication aims to provide a comprehensive overview of art market evolution from Renaissance times to the present day. Castellani developed the book after encountering a gap in available resources while preparing to teach a course at New York University. The volume will be published by Gagosian and becomes available on May 1 through the Gagosian Shop for $40, with wider distribution planned for autumn through Rizzoli. The book features a cover artwork by Maurizio Cattelan and includes an introduction by New Museum artistic director Massimiliano Gioni. Castellani emphasizes that Gagosian had no editorial influence on the content, which minimally references gallery founder Larry Gagosian. The historical survey examines various market models, beginning with patronage from the Catholic Church and aristocracy, progressing through developments like 17th-century Dutch free markets, French royal academies under Louis XIV, and the emergence of gallery systems with Paris dealer Paul Durand-Ruel during Impressionism. Contemporary considerations include expanding markets in China and the Middle East, digital transformations accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, and generational shifts in collecting. The book also analyzes significant auction events, such as the record-breaking 2018 sale of Leonardo da Vinci's 'Salvator Mundi' at Christie's New York and Damien Hirst's 2008 direct-to-auction sale at Sotheby's London. Castellani draws inspiration from Arnold Hauser's 'The Social History of Art,' examining how economic, political, and social contexts shape art valuation. She illustrates historical artist-patron relationships through examples like Giotto's Scrovegni Chapel paintings, commissioned for spiritual atonement. The author brings professional credibility from her tenure as deputy director at Sotheby's in London and New York, followed by eleven years as senior director at Gagosian in New York, where she organized exhibitions featuring artists including Francis Bacon, Lucio Fontana, and Pablo Picasso. Since 2019, she has taught as an adjunct professor in New York University's Steinhardt School visual arts administration master's program.
