Former Fishermen's Shed Transformed into Artist Residency in Le Marche

artist · 2026-04-27

A small seaside hut once used by fishermen as a storage shed and mussel sales point has been converted into an artist residency in Porto San Giorgio, Le Marche. The structure, named L'Approdo, features a restored vintage sign and compact, luminous interior spaces. The project is led by Karussell, an association founded by Matilde Galletti, Lidia Martorana, and Marica Riccioni, which has been active for three years in the Fermo and Porto San Giorgio area, organizing inclusive contemporary art initiatives in unexpected contexts such as historic homes. The inaugural resident artist is Alice Visentin, who created a site-specific work titled "Planète" (2021), a mixed-media environment covering all interior walls. Visentin's research focused on intangible cultural heritage, including a vast archive of songs, nursery rhymes, and riddles—over 400 hours of recorded tape—partly held by Gastone Pietrucci and partly at the Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia in Rome. The work is visible from outside through a window and glass door, day and night, and will remain until the end of September 2021. Future residents include illustrator Luca Caimmi in autumn 2021 for an editorial project on extraordinary sea events, and artist Mattia Pajè in spring 2022. The residency was made possible through collaboration with Marina di Porto San Giorgio and its president Renato Marconi.
