Forlì's San Domenico Museum to Mount Major Self-Portrait Show in 2025

The Museo Civico San Domenico in Forlì will open a major exhibition on artist self-portraits titled "Il ritratto dell'artista. Nello specchio di Narciso. Il volto, la maschera, il selfie" from February 22 to June 29, 2025. Curated by Gianfranco Brunelli, the show will feature over 300 works spanning antiquity to the 20th century, including mosaics from Antioch, Pompeian frescoes, Jan van Eyck's "Man in a Turban," and pieces by Caravaggio, Goya, Turner, Otto Dix, De Chirico, Magritte, Severini, Van Gogh, and Bill Viola. The exhibition marks the museum's 20th anniversary since its 2005 inauguration by Fondazione Cassa dei Risparmi. It follows the success of the 2024 Pre-Raphaelite show, which attracted over 115,000 visitors (13% international) with 356 works from 44 institutions. The museum is undergoing a €7.5 million renovation funded partly by PNRR, set to complete in 2026. The self-portrait theme explores artists' self-representation as social affirmation, personal torment, and dialogue with viewers, including sections on mirrors, doubling, female self-portraiture, and self-portrait collecting.
