Forgotten trove of 400 paintings discovered in Naples' Maschio Angioino

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

In November 2020, a hidden trove of approximately 400 artworks, including paintings, sculptures, and furniture, was unexpectedly uncovered in the underground storage of Maschio Angioino in Naples. Among the artists represented are Luca Giordano, Paolo De Matteis, and Francesco De Mura, with many pieces showing significant deterioration. A highlight is Giordano's 'Madonna del Rosario e Santi Domenicani' (4 meters wide, 2.64 meters tall), which is set to be restored for exhibition at the Museo di Castel Nuovo. Following the discovery, Mayor Luigi De Magistris, the municipality, and the Soprintendenza were promptly informed, leading to the collection being designated municipal property. The city has earmarked €150,000 for initial restoration efforts, while a technical commission will evaluate the works. It is believed these items were moved to the castle's basement after the 1980 Irpinia earthquake, but were subsequently forgotten. Documents reveal the artworks were 'stored in inadequate deposits' and highlight 'the degradation of the artistic heritage kept in the deposits in poor conditions of Castel Nuovo.'
