Forgotten Romanian Holiday Photos Star a German Shepherd
Erik Kessels and Valentin Fogoros have co-edited the 18th volume of the 'In Almost Every Picture' series, published by KesselKramer in Amsterdam in 2022. The book features amateur photographs taken between the 1960s and 1970s in Baile Tusnad, Romania, a popular communist-era spa town. The recurring subject is the photographer George Nitescu's unnamed German shepherd, which appears in images documenting local events like weddings, funerals, construction sites, and police investigations, as well as portraits of tourists. After Nitescu's death in 2018, hundreds of unclaimed prints were found in his abandoned villa studio, where tourists once picked up their photos from the dog's house. The series recontextualizes vernacular photography, giving it new meaning through creative sequencing.
