Forensic Architecture releases investigation into 2011 police killing of Mark Duggan

publication · 2026-04-20

An investigation into the police shooting of Mark Duggan on 4 August 2011 has been published by Forensic Architecture, a collective from London led by Eyal Weizman at Goldsmiths College. Duggan, a black man, was fatally shot by a Metropolitan Police officer while seated in a minicab, following an alleged gun pickup. His death sparked significant protests and riots, leading to five deaths and over 3,000 arrests. In 2018, Duggan's family initiated this investigation after an unsuccessful appeal against the 2014 inquest verdict that deemed the shooting lawful. The findings indicate that Duggan might have discarded the gun prior, or that police may have relocated it after his death. This release aligns with worldwide anti-racist demonstrations.
