Foqus: A Private Urban Regeneration Model in Naples' Spanish Quarters

institutional · 2026-05-05

In the Spanish Quarters of Naples, the Fondazione Quartieri spagnoli (Foqus) has established an innovative urban renewal initiative within a refurbished 16th-century convent. Launched two years ago by Rachele Furfaro and Renato Quaglia, this 10,000 square meter space functions as a self-sufficient micro-city, financed through private investments. It accommodates 18 businesses, the Academy of Fine Arts of Naples, a school, a center for children with disabilities, and the University of the Free Ages. Foqus serves over 1,000 participants daily, has generated 136 jobs, and supported the creation of four new companies. Noteworthy is the Argo center for disabled youth, which began operations in October 2016, assisting 40 individuals aged 6 to 27. Foqus stands out in Italy, with similar initiatives found in Paris and Amsterdam.
