Fondazione Prada Presents Kienholz: Five Car Stud in Milan
Fondazione Prada in Milan is hosting 'Kienholz: Five Car Stud', a major exhibition of works by Edward Kienholz (1927–1994) and his fifth wife Nancy Reddin Kienholz (b. 1943), curated by Germano Celant. The show features large-scale assemblages from the 1960s to the 1990s, including the titular installation 'Five Car Stud' (1969–72), which depicts a racial violence scene and was first shown at Documenta 5 in Kassel. After nearly 40 years in a Japanese collector's storage, it was restored and exhibited at LACMA and Louisiana Museum of Modern Art (2011–2012), now part of the Prada collection and shown for the first time in Italy. Other works include 'The Nativity' (1961), 'Back Seat Dodge ’38' (1964), 'Twilight Home' (1983), 'The Bronze Pinball Machine with Woman Affixed Also' (1980), and '76 J.C.s Led the Big Charade' (1992–1994), the last piece created before Edward's death. Nancy Reddin Kienholz, a photojournalist who collaborated with Edward from 1972 onward, describes the creative process as unloading a burden and notes that seeing the works reunited after 25 years feels like revisiting her birthplace. The exhibition runs until December 31, 2016.
