Fondazione Museo Igor Mitoraj established in Pietrasanta

institutional · 2026-04-27

The Fondazione Museo Igor Mitoraj has been officially established in Pietrasanta, Italy, with the signing of its founding act and statute at the Ministry of Culture. The foundation will manage the legacy of Polish sculptor Igor Mitoraj (1944–2014), known for monumental fragmented sculptures evoking Greco-Roman antiquities with postmodern traits. Mitoraj maintained his studio in Pietrasanta for nearly four decades. The signing involved Minister of Culture Dario Franceschini, Tuscany President Eugenio Giani, MiC Secretary General Salvatore Nastasi, Pietrasanta Mayor Alberto Stefano Giovannetti, and culture official Monica Torti. The foundation will catalog, conserve, and exhibit the Mitoraj Collection, enhancing the region's artistic heritage. A museum dedicated to Mitoraj, located in the former municipal market on Via Oberdan, is expected to open within the year. The architectural project, won in an international competition, is led by Paolo Brescia and Tommaso Principi of OBR Open Building Research. The museum will host events related to Mitoraj's life and work, aiming to boost cultural tourism in Versilia and Tuscany.
