Fondazione Malaspina Opens in Ascoli Piceno, Dedicated to Contemporary Photography

institutional · 2026-05-05

A new center for contemporary photography research, Fondazione Malaspina, has been inaugurated in Ascoli Piceno, located in the Marche region of central Italy. This is significant as most Italian photography institutions are situated in the northern part of the country, including Camera in Turin, Fondazione Forma in Milan, and Casa dei Tre Oci in Venice, along with events like Fotografia Europea in Reggio Emilia. Marchesa Laura Federica Peslauser Malaspina leads the foundation, with Alessandro Dandini de Sylva as its director. It will provide artist residencies, meetings, publications, and establish a permanent collection alongside a public photography library. The foundation also marks the reopening of Palazzo Malaspina, a 16th-century historic residence. Its first exhibition, "Qualsiasità," inspired by Cesare Zavattini, includes works from seven photographers, showcasing over eighty images of Italian provinces from 1984 to today, and aligns with Fotografia Europea's 2016 landscape theme. The second chapter, debuting in November, will be named "Per una fenomenologia dei paesaggi ordinari delle Marche."
