Fondazione Carla Fendi revives Sol LeWitt and Anna Mahler legacies in Spoleto

festival-fair · 2026-04-27

On June 27, 2021, during the 64th Festival dei Due Mondi, the Fondazione Carla Fendi unveiled 'Art & Science into Spoleto,' which showcased artistic narratives from the 1960s to the 1980s. Sol LeWitt, who was introduced by gallerist Marilena Bonomo, created notable works in Spoleto, including a frescoed room at Palazzo Collicola and pencil sketches at Eremo Bonomo and Torre Bonomo. His daughters, born in Umbria, played a role in shaping his use of color. Additionally, Anna Mahler (1904-1988), daughter of Gustav Mahler, resided in Spoleto and pursued sculpture studies in Rome. The foundation also produced three short films presented at Teatro Caio Melisso-Spazio Carla Fendi, while neuroscientist Vittorio Gallese will explore the neurological effects of art. Scholarships for artists were funded by the Carla Fendi Prize.
