Fondazione Caetani restores Federico Zuccari's 'La calunnia' in Rome
The Fondazione Camillo Caetani, operating since 1956 in Palazzo Caetani on Via delle Botteghe Oscure in Rome, has restored Federico Zuccari's large painting 'La calunnia,' a significant example of the 16th-century artist's work. The restoration, presented on October 24, removed heavy overpaint from the 1960s. The event gathered restorers and Zuccari experts led by art historian Bruno Toscano, president of the foundation. The foundation also funds research through a 2003 agreement with Roma Tre University's art history department, providing a three-year doctoral scholarship per cycle, and publishes monographs and the annual bulletin 'Palazzo Caetani.' The palace houses the Caetani family archive, period furnishings, and paintings including portraits of Onorato VI by Angelika Kauffmann, Pompeo Batoni, and Anton Raphael Mengs. The restored painting and other works are viewable by appointment, and the archive and library are open to researchers.
