Fondazione Archivio Turi Simeti Opens in Milan with Giovanna Silva Photo Show

Nearly one year after the death of Turi Simeti, the painter and sculptor from Alcamo, his family has established the Fondazione Archivio Turi Simeti in Milan to promote his legacy. The foundation, linked to an existing archive, will organize exhibitions, catalogues, and projects that engage young artists in dialogue with Simeti's work, introducing new generations to a key figure of postwar Italian abstraction. The inaugural project is a photographic exhibition by Giovanna Silva titled "Re-membering Turi Simeti," hosted at the gallery of the artist's daughter, Martina Simeti, on via Benedetto Marcello from February 24 to March 19. Silva's approximately one hundred photographs, taken in Simeti's studio over multiple sessions, focus on details with repeated frames and slight variations, revealing aspects of the artist's life. Silva described the experience as "more than immersing oneself in a studio; it's a house, a work, and a life." The installation, supported by architect Luciano Giorgi of LGB Architetti, who also designed the gallery space, forms a collage of fragments that reconstructs Simeti's home and workspace through his memory and that of his partner Essila Burello, a victim of the pandemic.
