Fondazione Aldo e Edda Lorenzi Opens in Milan

institutional · 2026-04-26

In Milan, the historic G. Lorenzi cutlery shop has been transformed into the Fondazione Aldo e Edda Lorenzi, a foundation dedicated to preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of cutting tools. The foundation's exhibition space, located at Via Correggio 19, has been open by appointment since 2020. The story began in 1929 when Giovanni Lorenzi opened a small workshop on Via Montenapoleone. His son Aldo and his wife Edda Chiodini ran the business for over sixty years, amassing a collection of around two thousand objects dating from Roman times to the present day, along with a specialized library of over seven hundred volumes and hundreds of magazines. In 2014, Aldo and his brother Franco closed the historic shop, which had become an informal museum with over 18,000 items. The foundation, curated by Giorgio Garlati, aims to promote the culture and art of sharp tools, treating artisans as artists. A book titled 'Lame lucenti' by Edda Chiodini, published by Silvana Editoriale in 2025, selects two hundred objects from the collection. The foundation focuses on education and transmission of knowledge, especially as specialized shops disappear and craftsmanship struggles to attract new generations.
