Fondation Thalie: A Brussels Art Hub Merging Intimacy and Rigor

exhibition · 2026-04-24

The Fondation Thalie in Brussels, founded in 2014 by collector Nathalie Guiot, has carved a niche as a philanthropic alternative to power galleries and visitor-obsessed museums. Directed by Julien Amicel, the center features a stained-glass window by Lionel Estève at its entrance. The space hosts three to five monthly events, including literary meetings with Barbara Polla, Véronique Caye, Mark Alizart, and Nathalie Azoulay. A restaurant for performance dinners and culinary conferences is planned for the basement. The foundation also runs an artist residency on its third floor and publishes artist books under Éditions Thalie. Currently on view is Agnès Thurnauer's solo exhibition 'Land & Language,' running until March 8, 2020. The show presents four large canvases depicting figures in life vests huddled on a raft, referencing the refugee crisis, with text from poet Rod Mengham. The paintings vary in background maps (Europe, world) and colors (orange, blue). Accompanying works include white resin letters scattered on the floor and threatening letter drawings on walls. The foundation's 2021 season will focus on Africa and resilience, with exhibitions, writer invitations, and cross-residencies.
