Fondation Louis Vuitton Opens Major Alexander Calder Retrospective

exhibition · 2026-04-14

Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris has unveiled 'Calder. Rêver en Équilibre,' a sweeping retrospective of Alexander Calder featuring nearly 300 works spanning half a century. The exhibition marks the centenary of Calder's arrival in Paris and fifty years since his death. Occupying over 3,000 square meters, including the building's grounds, the show traces Calder's evolution from the late 1920s to the 1960s and '70s, beginning with 'Cirque Calder' and moving through his abstraction breakthrough after meeting Piet Mondrian, the invention of the mobile (term coined by Marcel Duchamp), and his monumental stabiles. Curated by Suzanne Pagé, Dieter Buchhart, and Anna Karina Hofbauer, the exhibition emphasizes movement as a defining language, with works responding to air currents and mechanical systems. It also includes paintings, drawings, jewelry, and archival photographs, situating Calder among avant-garde figures like Jean Arp, Barbara Hepworth, and Pablo Picasso. The show dialogues with Frank Gehry's architecture, creating a reciprocal relationship. Separately, Calder Gardens in Philadelphia, a 1.8-acre sanctuary designed by Piet Oudolf and Herzog & de Meuron, presents Calder's sculptures without labels in a living landscape.
