Fondation Cartier to Move Next to Louvre in 2025

institutional · 2026-04-26

Established on October 20, 1984, by Alain Dominique Perrin at the Montcel estate in Jouy-en-Josas, Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain was the first corporate foundation in France focused on contemporary art. In 1994, it transitioned to a glass-and-steel structure designed by Jean Nouvel on Boulevard Raspail. To mark its 40th anniversary, the foundation will move to a historic Haussmannian building at Place du Palais-Royal, which Nouvel is redesigning, with plans to open by the end of 2025. Originally inaugurated as Grand Hôtel du Louvre in 1855 and later becoming Grands Magasins du Louvre in 1863, the site will feature over 6,000 sqm of exhibition space. A podcast series titled 'Voir venir, Venir voir' and a book documenting over 160 exhibitions have been launched to celebrate the milestone. The new location will showcase portraits of artists like Jean Nouvel and Agnès Varda, while Perrin emphasized the foundation's core principles: prioritizing artists, embracing diverse creative expressions, and maintaining independence from Cartier's commercial interests.
