Fondation Cartier's 'J'en rêve' Showcases 58 Artists Under 25
Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain in Paris presented 'J'en rêve' from June 24 to October 30, 2005, an exhibition focusing on artists mostly under 25. Director Hervé Chandès and his team invited senior artists to sponsor young creators, supplemented by open submissions. From 1,000 applications, 58 artists (including 36 women) were selected, working in drawing, photography, painting, video, and installation. Notable works include Simon Boudvin's inverted and nested houses (sponsored by Giuseppe Penone), Flavia Da Rin's dreamlike digital photographs (sponsored by Guillermo Kuitca), Jonas Bendiksen's journalistic images of dead cows in Russia and veiled women in Uzbekistan (sponsored by Raymond Depardon), and Christian Curiel's psychedelic triptych of children (sponsored by Adriana Varejão). Thomas Lélu's ironic photographs, such as 'Bus (After Jeff Koons)' and 'Paysage (After Daniel Buren)', directly reference older artists. The exhibition questioned the label of 'young artist' and its expiration date, with some artists maintaining the status until 45.
