Fondation Cartier Hosts Major Olga de Amaral Retrospective in Paris

exhibition · 2026-04-26

The Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in Paris is hosting a retrospective of Olga de Amaral, a Colombian artist born in Bogotá in 1932. After completing her studies at Cranbrook Academy in 1954, she returned to Colombia in 1955, where she blended American techniques with traditional textiles influenced by the Colombian landscape. Designed by architect Lina Ghotmeh, the exhibition features 80 works, including large-scale pieces. Highlights include de Amaral's textile innovations from the 1960s that incorporate materials such as linen and gold leaf, along with the "Brumas" series from 2013, crafted from cotton threads enveloped in plaster and acrylic. The lower level offers a thematic exploration spanning five decades, concluding with her spiritually reflective "Estelas" works, showcasing Baroque influences.
