Fondation Cartier Examines Latin American Photography's Political Role

exhibition · 2026-04-24

The Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain in Paris presents 'América Latina 1960-2013', an exhibition exploring the intertwined relationship between photography and politics across Latin America from the Cuban Revolution to the present. Running from November 17, 2013, to April 6, 2014, the show is organized in collaboration with the Museo Amparo in Puebla, Mexico. It features works by artists such as Claudia Andujar, Miguel Rio Branco, Rosângela Rennó, Sergio Larrain, and Graciela Iturbide, among others. The exhibition argues that Latin American photography is inseparable from political contexts, including dictatorships and resistance movements. It highlights the strategic use of text combined with images in posters, collages, and performances, as seen in works by Clemente Padín, Guillermo Deisler, and Lotty Rosenfeld. The show also includes a film interview series by artist Fredi Casco with thirty featured creators. This event coincides with Paris Photo, which returns to Paris after its Los Angeles launch, featuring several Latin American galleries and the Instituto Moreira Salles from Rio de Janeiro. Other concurrent exhibitions include Sergio Larrain at the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson, Sebastião Salgado at the Maison européenne de la photographie, and the François Pinault collection at the Conciergerie.
