Fondation Carmignac: A Barefoot Museum on Porquerolles Island

On the southern French Porquerolles Island, part of the Hyères archipelago, the Fondation Carmignac provides a distinctive underground museum experience where guests stroll barefoot. This museum, repurposed from an old farm, boasts galleries that are dug more than seven meters below ground to adhere to the landscape regulations of Port-Cros National Park, which was established in 1963. Designed by Studio GMAA architects, it features expansive windows for scenic views and a glass slab with water for an 'underwater' illusion. The 15-hectare park, crafted by Louis Benech, showcases sculptures by Ugo Rondinone, Ali Cherri, and others. In celebration of its 10th anniversary, the foundation is hosting 'VERTIGO' until November 2, 2025, which includes various artists' works and a permanent installation by Bruce Nauman.
