Fondation Beyeler marks 20 years with new building, free entry for under-25s

institutional · 2026-05-05

The Fondation Beyeler in Riehen, Switzerland, is preparing to celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2017. The collection has grown from 188 works in 1997 to 300 in 2016 through acquisitions, donations, and long-term loans. A new catalogue will be published in 2017, available online and in print. The anniversary will be marked by the presentation of Peter Zumthor's design for a new building in autumn, free admission for under-25s throughout the year, an expanded Young Art Club, and a renewed social media presence. The 2017 exhibition program includes Claude Monet (late January, 50 works focusing on light, reflections, and shadows), Wolfgang Tillmans (late May, coinciding with Art Basel, the foundation's first major photography exhibition with musical collaboration by Frank Ocean), and Paul Klee (October, about 100 works organized around the theme of the abstraction process). Three reinstallations of the collection will focus on the first 1997 hang, the relationship between artists and the collection, and between collectors and the collection. Off-site projects include a monumental installation by Ernesto Neto at Zurich's main train station and a project by Tino Sehgal (location and date undisclosed).
