FOMU Antwerp explores diverse family structures in new photography show

exhibition · 2026-05-09

The Fotomuseum Antwerpen (FOMU) presents 'Families', an exhibition examining the many interpretations of family through photography, running until 23 May 2026. Curated by Anne Ruygt, the show features over 200 photographs from the museum's collection, including works by Mous Lamrabat, Omar Victor Diop, Mayara Ferrão, Peter Hujar, Carmen Winant, Seiichi Furuya, and Ugo Woatzi. Dutch author Niña Weijers contributed texts reflecting on ten works, exploring themes of chosen family and alternative kinship structures. Highlights include Lamrabat's portrait of his mother, Diop's insertion of himself into anonymous 1950s-60s slides, Ferrão's AI-generated images of queer Black and Indigenous women, and Woatzi's series 'The Age of Love' displayed in a 1905 Kaiserpanorama. The exhibition also features 'hidden mother portraits' and post-mortem photography from the 19th and 20th centuries, addressing invisible labor and commemoration. Ruygt aimed to connect contemporary questions with historical phenomena, using the show as a vehicle for the FOMU collection, which comprises some four million objects.
