Flycat's 50-Year Retrospective at MyOwnGallery in Milan

Italian writing pioneer Flycat (born 1970 in Milan) celebrates his 50th birthday and 36 years in street culture with a solo exhibition at MyOwnGallery | Superstudio in Milan. Titled "THE PIECE (PEACE) MAKER," the show spans two floors and features around 100 works, 50 of which are new. Highlights include "Rolling Y," the first self-moving letter toy, and the "LETTERE" series, where Flycat spray-paints over Milan's metro map, sometimes incorporating art history cutouts for an ironic effect. The exhibition also includes contributions from fellow artists and friends: a fanzine by Pzyko Vision, and a video tribute featuring rappers and street artists such as Sick Jacken of Psycho Realm, Chaz Bojorquez, Kemo The Blaxican, and Sal Rojas. Flycat earned their respect during his travels: first to New York, where he befriended the late Phase 2, a writing legend, and later to the West Coast, joining the Chicano cultural-artistic movement of East L.A. Curator Francesca Alfano Miglietti, who recently curated Letizia Battaglia's show at Palazzo Reale, describes Flycat's work as "a research on language and word that arrives at a total pictorial calligraphy." The exhibition runs until February 16, 2020.
