Fluxus Pioneer Shigeko Kubota Dies at 77
Renowned Japanese artist Shigeko Kubota, a pivotal figure in the Fluxus art movement, passed away in New York at the age of 77. Born in Japan, she pursued her studies in sculpture at Tokyo University of Education before relocating to New York City in 1964, where she furthered her education at NYU and the New School for Social Research. Collaborating with notable Fluxus personalities, Kubota was regarded as the 'vice president' of the movement by George Brecht. Her influential pieces include the performance "Vagina Painting" and the video "My Father." Kubota received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1987 and was married to video art icon Nam June Paik.
