Florence Suburb Square Transformed by Urban Art Project Parole in Piazza

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

The working-class Novoli district in northwest Florence is the focus of the urban art project Parole in Piazza, which reactivates Piazza Valdelsa as part of the Asphalt Art initiative shared with 18 other European cities. Funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies, founded by former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, with support from Fondazione CR Firenze under the Bando Partecipazione Culturale, the project harnesses art to engage the community in creative activities improving public space. In Florence, the project was realized in collaboration with designers from Graphic Studio Sale Grosso and illustrator Luchadora. The horizontal artwork covers 1,300 square meters, graphically reconnecting functional spaces through illustration, graphic elements, and words. The piazza becomes a container of sounds and slang terms that acoustically suggest gesture and movement, inviting play. Words merge with graphics by Sale Grosso and Luchadora's rounded illustrations, creating a unique work that, according to Mayor Dario Nardella, fosters belonging and unites generations. A portion of the square is reserved for a walk of fame honoring collaborators, with names transcribed via live painting during the inauguration on September 16. The Galleria di Arte Contemporanea Frittelli in Florence will host an exhibition on the project's process until September 22, featuring videos by photographers Sander and Arber Marra, photos, and preparatory drawings.
