Florence's new culture councilor lacks cultural experience

Florence's newly elected mayor Sara Funaro has appointed Giovanni Bettarini as assessore alla Cultura, despite his lack of specific cultural experience. Bettarini, 54, previously served as assessore for Economic Development, Tourism, Urban Planning, and Smart City under former mayor Dario Nardella, and was mayor of Borgo San Lorenzo and president of the Union of Municipalities of Mugello. He holds a law degree and a diploma in clarinet from a conservatory, and has participated in musical, theatrical, and television productions. Funaro justified the appointment by citing gender parity (half the council are women) and a mix of youth and political experience. Critics argue that for a city like Florence, the culture portfolio requires a specialized background, as exemplified by previous holders: Stefano Boeri (architect and president of Triennale Milano), Tommaso Sacchi (former curator and artistic director), and deputy mayor Alessia Bettini (who also held tourism). The role is crucial for managing Florence's vast cultural heritage, including civic museums, and for countering mass tourism while preserving the city's vitality. Arturo Galansino, director of Palazzo Strozzi, has emphasized the need for a broad political vision that balances economic growth with social sustainability. The appointment has raised concerns about whether Bettarini's administrative competence can compensate for his lack of cultural expertise.
