Florence's historic railway workshops to become a creative hub for contemporary arts

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

Florence is set to transform its historic Officine Grandi Riparazioni (OGR) into a major creative center for contemporary art, theater, and music, including housing, ateliers for young artists, a training center, and exhibition spaces. Mayor Dario Nardella detailed the project to Artribune, describing it as a 'citadel' modeled after Paris. The OGR area, sold to Ferrovie dello Stato and an Italian company, will undergo urban regeneration on about 80,000 square meters adjacent to the Nuovo Teatro dell'Opera, creating a new arts and culture district at Porta al Prato. The project, anticipated since 2017, includes private building intervention, a tramway replacing the current railway, new roads, green areas, cycle paths, and connections to the Parco delle Cascine. Funding of approximately 18 million euros will come from urbanization charges, with additional resources sought from Italian and international patrons for management. The center aims to integrate with existing venues like the Nuovo Teatro dell'Opera, Palacongressi, Leopolda, and the Fortezza, which is also being renovated. Nardella emphasized the project's ambition to encompass music, theater, visual arts, training, research, and new talents, basing urban regeneration on culture as a distinguishing factor. The initiative may also unlock long-standing issues like the fate of the Loggia Isozaki degli Uffizi, with Nardella's favorable stance contrasting with Vittorio Sgarbi's criticisms.
