Florence opens civic museums for free to combat COVID-19 crisis

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

In response to the economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Florence will open its civic museums free of charge for three days, from March 6 to 8, 2020. The initiative, announced by Mayor Dario Nardella and Culture Councillor Tommaso Sacchi, aims to revive cultural life and restore community spirit. Museums include Palazzo Vecchio, the Brancacci Chapel, and Museo Novecento. The move follows the closure of cultural venues in northern Italy due to the virus. Meanwhile, Milan launched the hashtag #Milanononsiferma to promote resilience, as major events like Salone del Mobile were postponed to June 16–21 and MIA Photo Fair's date remains undecided.
