Florence Museums Open on Christmas Sparks Debate with Uffizi Director

Florence's civic museums will open on Christmas Day 2022, a decision criticized by Eike Schmidt, director of the Uffizi Galleries, who argues that major European and American museums like the Louvre, Prado, Met, and MoMA remain closed on December 25. Schmidt stated during a hearing at Palazzo Vecchio's Culture Commission that opening on Christmas goes against Italian and Florentine tradition and does not value family time. He expressed willingness to open on Monday afternoons and until 9 PM during high season if sufficient staff can be hired. Unions Filcams Cgil Firenze and Fp Cgil Firenze also opposed the civic museums' Christmas opening, calling it a wrong model of cultural consumption that risks overshadowing the city's extensive holiday programming through January 8. They noted the museum will open without mediation or bookshop services, which they argue undermines the museum's mission.
