Florence mural controversy: Nemo's work sparks political clash between Montanari and city council
A mural by street artist Nemo's, commissioned by Florence's city council for the Museo Novecento's residency program in via Palazzuolo, has ignited a political dispute. Art historian Tomaso Montanari accused the administration of censorship, claiming they asked Nemo's to modify or remove the work because it criticized the city's real estate speculation, unaffordable rents, privatization of public spaces, and the 'Open to meraviglia' marketing campaign. Montanari published his allegations in Il Fatto Quotidiano, stating he learned from the artist that the council deemed the mural offensive to the mayor personally. However, Deputy Mayor Alessia Bettini and Mayor Dario Nardella denied any censorship, asserting the mural remains in place and will be inaugurated as planned alongside the residencies starting in April 2024. Museum director Sergio Risaliti called the accusations instrumental, noting Montanari had not seen the work in person. The residency program, funded by the Wonderful! Art Research Program 2024 – Maria Manetti Shrem, selected four artists (Friedrich Andreoni, Lucia Cantò, Benedetta Fioravanti, Giovanna Repetto) and curator Benedetta Casini from over 170 applicants. The controversy highlights ongoing tensions over Florence's cultural policy and tourism management.
