Florence Marks Women in Science Day with Art Exhibition
On February 11, in celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, 'Doubt Thou the Stars are Fire' will take place at Florence's Galleria Immaginaria, honoring astronomer Henrietta Swan Leavitt. Curated by Elisabeth Vermeer, the event showcases British artist Mick Finch's 'Book of Knowledge' series and Italian artist Marilena Faraci's paintings created with oil and bitumen. Additionally, designer Silvia Zambarbieri has crafted a bas-relief portrait of Leavitt. The exhibition is open from February 11 to 13, with a digital version accessible through Design of the Universe on social media and YouTube, featuring insights from various artists and experts. Leavitt's groundbreaking early 20th-century research on Cepheid variables established the period-luminosity relationship for measuring distances to stars.
