Florence Lazar at Musée de Grenoble: Post-Milosevic Serbia in Video and Photography

exhibition · 2026-04-23

Curated by Christine Poullain, Florence Lazar's exhibition at the Musée de Grenoble coincided with Guy Tosatto's appointment as director and the rehang of the permanent collection by Élisabeth Besson. The show occupied five levels of the graphic arts cabinet's tower, with a narrow concrete staircase and small rooms creating intimacy. On the ground and first floors, a portrait gallery of women in bust shots captured unposed, empathetic moments. The upper three levels featured videos shot in Serbia in 2002. "Otpor" (2002) shows three members of the pacifist organization founded in 1998, performing theatrical actions as an interface between power and the public. "Femmes en noir" (2001) focuses on women's faces in a group addressing patriarchy and war. "Socio-drame" (2002) presents a looped micro-event on a monitor, with women's simple gestures highlighting social rules. The exhibition ran from November 9, 2002, to January 19, 2003.
