Florence Launches First Classical High School for Cultural Heritage

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

The Cavour Pacinotti school in Florence has inaugurated Italy's first Liceo Classico for Cultural Heritage, a specialized high school track blending classical humanities with cultural heritage management. The program, which began accepting enrollments in 2020, aims to train future professionals in the protection, conservation, and promotion of Italy's vast cultural assets, including 4,026 museums, 293 archaeological parks, 570 monuments, and 55 UNESCO World Heritage sites. The curriculum includes Greek, Latin, Italian, philosophy, history, geography, art history (with a focus on conservation), English (three hours weekly), and a dedicated course on Cultural Heritage Law in the third and fourth years. Students will also engage in field experiences at museums, restoration labs, artisan workshops, and conferences. The school is highly selective, admitting only 12 students per biennium to ensure intensive preparation. The initiative responds to the need for broad humanistic training as an alternative to the often-failed culture-marketing model in museums.
