Flooding Destroys Polina Raiko's Mural-Filled Home in Ukraine

The Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant in Kherson was blown up by Russian forces on June 6, 2023, causing catastrophic flooding that destroyed the home and murals of Ukrainian folk artist Polina Raiko. Raiko, born in 1928, was a self-taught artist who began painting her home's interior in 1994 after the deaths of her daughter and husband and the imprisonment of her son. She transformed her six-bedroom house in Oleshky into a renowned folk art environment, covering walls, ceilings, and doors with vibrant birds, flowers, and biographical scenes. After her death in 2004, the house was sold to a Canadian couple, but preservation efforts led to plans for a museum, with the Ivan Honchar Museum in Kyiv stepping in. In 2018, reproductions of her murals were exhibited at the Pinchuk Art Centre in Kyiv as part of "A Space of One's Own." The flooding has likely destroyed the house and its art, as reported by Semen Khramstov. Art historian Oksana Semenik lamented, "Most likely, we will lose it... We have lost her heritage and her physical presence." Raiko's legacy is compared to other self-taught artists like Maud Lewis, Sonabai Rajawar, and Clementine Hunter, and her story of turning tragedy into triumph remains an inspiration.
