Floating +Pool prototype nears completion in Brooklyn

The first phase of a floating pool for New York's East River is nearing completion. Pool 1, a rectangular pilot of the larger cross-shaped +Pool concept, is being built in Erie Basin Bargeport in Red Hook, Brooklyn. It will be installed off Pier 35 between Two Bridges and the Lower East Side. The project, run by non-profit Friends of + POOL, has received 17 approvals across city, state, and federal agencies. The filtration system, engineered with Arup, cleans river water without chlorine. The final +Pool will be 9,000 square feet. Supported by Governor Kathy Hochul's NY Swims initiative, successful deployment could see +Pools across Upstate New York. The public demonstration has been pushed to 2027 due to coordination with the Brooklyn Bridge-Montgomery Coastal Resilience project. Founders include Archie Lee Coates IV, Jeff Franklin, Dong-Ping Wong, and Oana Stănescu; Wong has claimed he was frozen out after raising diversity concerns.
