Floating Archipelago Installed on Lake in Mantua
The city of Mantua has installed seven floating platforms, named Arcipelago di Ocno, on Lago Inferiore as part of a broader urban regeneration effort. Designed by architect Joseph Grima and Space Caviar, the circular platforms range from 4 to 20 meters in diameter and are anchored together, accessible by boat. The project aims to reframe the lake as an integral part of the historic center, not just a scenic backdrop. According to urban regeneration assessor Lorenza Baroncelli, the initiative serves both to reengage citizens with the lake and as a marketing tool for Mantua, which was Italian Capital of Culture in 2016. The archipelago can host performances, workshops, fishing, and casual visits. Inmates from Mantua prison are assisting with assembly to foster their reintegration. The first major test will be during the upcoming Festivaletteratura, which will feature 400 writers and artists, including Jonathan Safran Foer.
