Flexible Dormitory in Schönaich by Atelier Kaiser Shen
In Schönaich, Baden-Württemberg, Atelier Kaiser Shen completed a flexible dormitory for affordable and refugee housing in 2025. The 2,142 m² building uses cross-laminated timber walls and an external steel frame for adaptability. The project was curated by Hadir Al Koshta, with lead architect Matthias Stauch and office leads Kilian Juraschitz and Prof. Florian Kaiser. The design team included Johannes Schreiner, Yanghao Shu, Tim Kölle, and Patrick Schneider. Landscape architecture was by Jedamzik + Partner, with engineering by IMS, str.ucture, Energa-plan, Etgenium, and Huber & Dieterle. Photographs by Brigida Gonzalez.
