Flavio Favelli and Dario Agati Paint Palii for Quintana di Foligno 2023

For the 2023 edition of the Giostra della Quintana in Foligno, two contemporary artists created the ceremonial drappi (banners) awarded to winners of the jousting tournaments. Flavio Favelli (Florence, 1967) made the drappo for the Palio della Rivincita (September), titled 'l'Originale', incorporating text, words, and symbols like the moon and stars, referencing the Quintana, the National Lottery, the local candy Rossana, and the Marian imagery on Foligno's cathedral facade. Dario Agati (Caltagirone, 1990) created the drappo for the Palio della Sfida (June), favoring painting as his sole medium. The initiative, started in 2014 by professor Italo Tomassoni, is now led by art historian Marta Silvi and collector/art producer Pier Luigi Metelli, supported by the Direttivo Ente Giostra Quintana Foligno. Past artists include Adelaide Cioni, Thomas Braida, and Matteo Fato. Silvi noted that pairing a younger artist with an established one marks an important edition, and a publication is planned for the project's tenth anniversary. Metelli praised the project as a fascinating survey of contemporary Italian painting within a 17th-century reenactment context.
