Flavio Faganello's Photography Rediscovered in Trento Retrospective
A major retrospective at the Museo Diocesano di Trento revives the work of Flavio Faganello (1933–2005), a photographer long forgotten. Faganello gained fame for his dramatic black-and-white coverage of a 1966 flood in Trentino, which was published in The Times. He spent decades documenting disappearing mountain traditions in the Val di Sole, Val dei Mocheni, and other remote areas. His career began in the postwar period, assisting friend Adino Bridi, and included training at Publifoto in Milan and travels across Europe and to Naples during military service. Collaborating with writer Aldo Gorfer for thirty years, he produced notable publications such as "Solo il vento bussa alla porta" (1970) and "Gli eredi della solitudine" (1973), as well as guidebooks to Trentino valleys. His first major recognition came with a 1986 solo exhibition at Palazzo delle Albere in Trento, curated by Arturo Carlo Quintavalle. The current exhibition, "Flavio Faganello. Fotografie in cammino," runs until September 8, 2025, curated by Katia Malatesta and Marlene Huber, promoted by the Autonomous Province of Trento, with a catalog by Antiga edizioni. Writer Mario Rigoni Stern described Faganello as having "testified to an unrepeatable time and world."
