Flaminio Gualdoni Wins Premio Città di Tarquinia for Ceramic Sculpture Scholarship

Critic and art historian Flaminio Gualdoni received the Premio Città di Tarquinia Luciano Marziano on November 3, 2018, awarded by the Società Tarquiniense d’Arte e Storia to individuals excelling in art criticism and curatorial work related to ceramic sculpture. The award is the first phase of a two-year project culminating in 2019 with the Premio Città di Tarquinia Vasco Palombini for ceramic sculpture. Concurrently, the exhibition "Ugo La Pietra & manifattura Rometti a Tarquinia," curated by Lorenzo Fiorucci, runs until December 9, 2018, at the Museo della Ceramica di Palazzo dei Priori. Gualdoni, a professor of ancient art history at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, has focused on ceramics since 1979, curating shows like "Scultura e ceramica in Italia nel Novecento" at the Galleria d’arte moderna di Bologna and retrospectives of Nanni Valentini and Carlo Zauli. He notes a resurgence in ceramic sculpture among artists born in the 1970s, a generation he plans to highlight in a forthcoming exhibition at the church of San Pancrazio in Tarquinia, funded by the prize. Gualdoni aims to explore the cultural, socioeconomic, and institutional factors behind this artistic flowering.
