FLAMIN Fellowship Brings Six UK Video Artists to Sardinia for Carnival Residency
Six video artists from the United Kingdom will explore the Barbagia region of eastern Sardinia during Carnival season as part of the FLAMIN Fellowship in Sardinia, a residency program organized by Fondazione Sardegna Film Commission, Museo MAN di Nuoro, and Film London. The selected artists—Graeme Arnfield, Calum Bowden, Rosie Carr, Callum Hill, Onyeka Igwe, and Kristina Pulejkova—began a reconnaissance trip in January, visiting cultural institutions such as the Museo MAN, ISRE di Nuoro, and the State Archive, as well as towns including Lula, Gavoi, Ovodda, Orotelli, Ottana, Orani, and Bosa. The residency focuses on the Barbaricino Carnival, an ancient folkloric tradition involving rituals, customs, and masks. Nevina Satta, director of Sardegna Film Commission, stated that Sardinia is a land of research and production capable of inspiring artists. The residency will conclude on March 16, 2019, with a public event sharing the artistic outcomes. The MAN di Nuoro's director emphasized that the fellowship initiates a long-term international project, reinforcing the museum's role in supporting artists through residencies and research. A future exchange will select Sardinian video artists for specialized training in the UK on multimedia languages.
