Five Winter Exhibitions Explore Identity, Solitude, and Representation

exhibition · 2026-04-19

Five distinct exhibitions across Europe and the United States offer critical perspectives on contemporary life. At The Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle, Nathan Coley's installations 'You Create What You Will' and 'Tate Modern on Fire' examine belief systems and institutional fragility until 1 March. Jeff Wall's survey at Gallerie d’Italia Turin, running until 1 February, presents large-scale photographs confronting war, gender, class, and identity. Tiffany Sia's 'Phantasmatic Screens' at MUDAM Luxembourg, on view until 11 January, uses installations to explore diasporic connections through imaginative geographies. Tommy Kha's exhibition 'Other Things Uttered' at the Addison Gallery in Andover, until 25 January, critiques photographic narratives through cardboard self-portraits addressing queer and immigrant identity. Yannis Bournais's 'A Manual For Solitude' at Galleria Giampaolo Abbondio in Milan, open until 30 January, presents a photographic cycle depicting urban aftermath. These shows collectively challenge traditional perspectives, with themes ranging from the exclusion of queer people of color in photography to the social construction of place.
