Five Photography Shows in New York Despite the Pandemic
In fall 2020, as culture tentatively restarts amid uncertainty, photography exhibitions are thriving in New York due to shorter setup times. The Whitney Museum presents 'Working Together: The Photographers of the Kamoinge Workshop,' featuring about 150 photographs by the Black photographers' collective founded in 1963, on view until March 28, 2021. The International Center of Photography shows 'Covid New York: Five ICP Alumni,' with works by Yuki Iwamura, Sarah Blesener, Jeenah Moon, Gaia Squarci, and Jeff Mermelstein documenting the city as pandemic epicenter, plus '#ICPConcerned: Global Images for Global Crisis' with submissions from over 60 countries, through January 3, 2021. Fotografiska hosts 'Andres Serrano. Infamous,' a visual exploration of everyday racism in America through photographed vintage objects, until March 14, 2021. Matthew Marks Gallery presents 'Luigi Ghirri: The Idea of Building,' curated by artist Matt Connors, with 29 vintage prints and archival materials from the Italian photographer, through December 19, 2020. Staley Wise Gallery offers 'Kurt Markus: A Life in Photography,' surveying the American photographer's career from Monument Valley landscapes to cowboys and musicians, through January 16, 2021.
