Five German Museums Celebrate 40 Years of Video Art with Preservation Project
In celebration of 40 years of video art, five German institutions—Kunsthalle Bremen, ZKM Karlsruhe, K21 Düsseldorf, Lenbachhaus Munich, and Museum der bildenden Künste Leipzig—are hosting exhibitions until May 21, 2006. The initiative, known as "Digital Heritage," focuses on safeguarding magnetic tape artworks from deterioration. Bremen showcases early multimedia pieces by artists such as Nam June Paik, Wolf Vostell, and Joseph Beuys. Düsseldorf highlights video installations from the 1980s by Abramovic & Ulay and Conradt, while Karlsruhe works on restoring tapes from the 1960s and 70s, featuring Herbert Schuhmacher. Munich's "UPDATE 06" presents contemporary creators, and Leipzig emphasizes the East German super-8 movement from the 1980s. The exhibitions also include films by Samuel Beckett and Peter Roehr, showcasing the interdisciplinary nature of video.
